Hola! Bienvenidos !
Let me introduce you to my friend,
Marco Flaco. I first met Marco Flaco
during the filming of the motion
picture, "End of the Spear" in 2004.
He was one of the excellent actors
from the Embera Tribe of Panama
working on the movie. He portrayed
the main character Mincayani as a
boy... and thus was one of the stars
of the first seven minutes of the movie!
I have kept up with Marco since then
and can tell you he is a sincere kid
who really wants to better his life and
come to the Uniited States for High
School. (He did do it! Now we are
hoping that he can continue his ESL
education in Thailand, where I am
living.)
We are in need of time, talent, money,
suggestions, good wishes, prayers,
and much wisdom and energy to
CONTINUE helping Marco with his
education!
THIS IS....
"the OPPORTUNITY of a Lifetime!"
(. . . Marco's lifetime.)
Here is Marco in his class at American Overseas English
School. He has been in classes for over ONE YEAR
now! He is smart, dedicated, and deserving to COME
TO THE USA. But it is a difficult and expensive
process. Let's change a life, let's help him!
Background:
Marco and the Movie!
I was the "Still Photographer" for the movie, End of the Spear filmed
in Panama. The first week of night shoots featured Marco and
others in a large tribal hut. During many lulls in the action Marco
would sometimes hang out with me. Being ever a bit mischievous,
Marco somehow transformed my name from "Bob Bowling", to "Bugs
Bunny." And from thence a friendship was formed, the Embera kid
from Panama, and Bugs Bunny, photo-dude from the USA.
Here are a few photos from Spring of 2004 in Panama. Marco, and
all the other Embera for that matter, did an outstanding job, not just
as extras, but as many of the principal roles key to the movie.
These people showed an amazing ability to empathize and act,
even though most of them had never seen a movie before!
Marco, with his nickname, "Marco Polo", was well-liked on the set.
He not only took his directions well, but also learned many stunts
with Stunt Coordinator Lauro Chartrand. He even jumped off a 40
foot cliff onto some mattresses and boxes! (See YOUTUBE link
below.) And yes, we did teach him the Marco Polo game in the hotel
swimming pool... he's like a fish underwater and is quite good at it.

Marco's final scene (at right) is when he
takes Dayumae to the foreigners. He
has promised to help her, but really
doesn't want her to go. I saw lots more
of him during production since several
in his family were in other scenes.
By the end of production, I knew I
wanted to visit Panama and the Embera
again. I talked to Marco about this after
the Wrap Party in my broken Espanol
and my dicionario. I was a bit sad for
him because we had kind of bonded
and now I was leaving. Plus this exciting
production time was over. But Marco
put his arm around me and said, "We
are family."
And somehow, I believed him. So 10 months later.... I returned. Back to see
more of Panama, other crew member friends, and, my buddy Marco.
At some point I may add more photos
of my time with Marco and the Embera
during Carnival in February 2005.
Let's just say we had a grand
adventure with our crew friend
Michelle, who took us to Pedasi and
beyond during the wild Carnival times.
(Mardi Gras.)
